Editing the first day

So, today I was able to put our clips together from the interview we shot last night, and everything went smoothly. I used all of the shots we took last night, and everything is set in place. My job for the editing process is setting the clips in chronological order, making cuts, zooms, and making sure everything is timed correctly.
Assembling the clips proved to be a bit more challenging than I initially thought it would be. Since the actors did not have a set in stone script, the timing would be off for different shots, and so would the movement. For instance, one of the more complicated parts of this was transitioning from the opening 2-shot to the close-up of David Hernandez Introducing Dr. Mueller. This was specifically challenging because in some shots Hernandez pointed at Dr. Mueller and in some he did not. Looking for clips and timing it up to perfection was a time consuming task. Thankfully, good ole overshooting saved the day!
Screenshot 2026-02-26 at 7.48.03 PM.png

Another technique I did that was ceartinley easier than the last one was the slow zoom in to Dr. Mueller's face that eventually ended up as a close up. As Dr. Mueller was stalling before making his announcement. This gave off the feeling that something was very wrong. His stalling built suspense for the announcment and it’s also intended to make the audience feel uneasy. The discrete zoom in puts the attention on him and adds suspense. Once he finnaly, makes the announcment it was a proper close-up of Dr. Mueller making eye contact, making it really uncomfortable for the audience.
Lastly, I kept the zoom in for an extra 2 seconds of Dr. Mueller staring with the audio muted. This was the final editing touch to add emphasis to the importance of the scene.

Day 2 Of Filming

Today, we shot the scenes of Dr. Mueller Breaking the news. Going into filming, Sam and I believed that the filming process would only require 30-40 minutes of our time, but the process lasted over an hour and 10 minutes. While the shots were simple, we wanted to perfect them. Our instructor places a big emphasis on overshooting, and I think it is safe to say that after today, she would be proud of us. We recorded the entire scene numerous times from start to finish in every angle to have a wide variety of clips to work with when editing. We have the basic long two-shot and a close-up of both Dr. Mueller and David Hernandez. Yes...David HERNANDEZ
Part of the reason the process took longer than expected was due to some last minute changes and final decisions. The first one was going from David Litmen to Hernandez. The reason for this change was because of Sam's dad's accent. While we had originally planned to make the show hosted by an American, his Hispanic accent would not make it realistic. Rafael wanted his Colombian roots to be represented in this film.
Secondly, we made a team decision to film on the white side of the studio. We decided this because of the more professional look. Not to mention one of my CCRs will be filmed on the darker side, so I preferred to keep things fresh.
The last change made was some changes to the script. After 2 takes we realized the video would be too lenghty. We still need to film Maverick's scenes, so we shortened them up. After shortening it up, our parents were not used to saying their lines, so they stuttered too much, and it did not sound natural. Me and sam told them to have the base of what they are saying, but they could improvise when stuck. This was exactly what they needed. After this suggestion, everything came out smooth and we are very satisfied with the results.
My favorite shot that we had was one that I did not have planned going into filming. Once i saw a camera in the studio, my mind instantly took me to a previous interviews i have seen. I see thing angle a lot and took inspiration. The behind the scenes allows the audience to feel more part of the experience and adds seriousness. This was a nice touch to the film

angles that will take your interviews ... (example/inspiration)

My team and I will be taking a page out of one of the most successful thriller films of all time. Psycho (1960). In the famous shower scene, Hitchcock uses the sound of silence. While the murder film is suspenseful in itself, the argument certainly can be made that the silence and shots from before that actual murder make it far more suspenseful.  Dr. Mueller staring into the camera after making the announcement with dead silence makes the audience feel uncomfortable and suspenseful. After all, sometimes silence is louder than noise.
While Dr. Mueller is talking on the show, he will be talking to the host. Once he is about to announce the news, he will look directly into the camera. Obviously, Dr. Mueller will not be talking to the audience of the movie; he will be talking to those that took his medicine. Despite him not talking to the actual audience of the movie, Dr mueller looking directly into the camera makes it more intense.
To conclude our second day of filming, I would say Sam and I did a very good job making quick decisions. Our communication and collaborative work are what make filming with him a smooth process. We filmed a very good amount and have a wide variety of shots. We are very happy with our results and look forward to our final day of filming.

CCR #1

For my first CCR, I plan on taking advantage of my dad's studio. It is highly likely I will do a podcast. The black side of my dad's studio is perfect for a podcast. It has the Misce en scene elements that are perfect for a more informal podcast which is the style I am aiming for. I will likely be getting interviewed as the main director of the film. This is simple, effective, and gets the job done.
I will answer profoundly: How does your product use or challenge conventions, and how does it represent social groups or issues?
First of all, a convention is an expectation, or "rule," that certain things have. In films when talking about the target audience, the most important thing is growing and, at the same time, keeping your fanbase. To do this, filmmakers must understand their genres conventions and hit many of the key ones to attract their target audience, yet challenge some of the conventions to make a film stand out. When analysing characters and conflict that drive the story, it explains how these elements create suspense, tension, or emotional impact for the audience (Fiveable, 2026).
To begin, our film is a mystery/drama. Drama typically involves a conflict that the protagonist is attempting to resolve. This falls right along the lines of a typical drama film. Not to mention this drama film is due or die situation, which is what hardcore drama fans are expecting when tuning in to watch these films. Having a timer on the mission enforces the drama aspect of this film. When talking about drama, a deeply emotional character likely comes to mind.  In this case, Maverick, the main character and protagonist, will be a flat character. The film will revolve more around the problem than Maverick himself. He will have little to no backstory; just a regular, every-day guy who chose to put matters into his own hands.

You may be asking why we are choosing to challenge the convention of a deeply emotional main character. Well, this is where the mystery comes in. We want to make this film a whole mystery. What went wrong and how it will be solved is a typical convention for a mystery film. An issue that remains unsolved throughout the whole film, with clues that will add up torwards the end, is also a common convention that will be seen throught the entire duration of this film. In a typical mystery film like The Iimitation Game, there is a mentor helping out the protagonist resolve the mystery. In this case, the antagonist, Dr. Mueller, is taking his own life, which will eliminate any type of mentor. The protagonist not having a mentor challenges the mystery convention. This allows for the mission to be far more challenging for Maverick making it more entertaining.
Lastly, representation can be used to allow the audience to sympathize with the protagonist. Maverick is represented as an everyday guy saving the world. Maverick being represented as the typical every day guy allows for the audience to sympathize with him because they can relate to him.

Group Meeting 2

Today was group meeting number 2, and once again it was a great experience!

Andre's idea is about how the media takes over an individual's life. This is all about technology, and we all really liked her idea. There seemed to be no issues until the credit sequences were brought up. Selena quickly came up with the idea of incorporating the credits into the technology. If i where Andre i would certainly use it. Incorporating it in the computer screen or through phone notifications is a really clever idea.
Ethan is doing stop motion. I really like his idea and after looking at his blog, he is working very hard to get this done. I suggested the importance of color and that it is often very overlooked. I have worked with Ethan on previous projects, and I believe he has a very solid understanding of filmmaking. One of the thing i would improve is adding more to the plot.
Camlia's idea is based on a girl whose sister passed away. The film will begin as a flashback in a beach and will incoorperate many special effects like hallucinations. We were all concerned about the film being hard to portray. Portraying that the hand popping up while she is looking at a picture is not reality, or maybe that the beach is a flashback because her sister is dead. She then told us her partner is a good editor and that she is aware that it can be hard to portray. If she can pull this off, I believe the plot and the idea are very good.
Macie's idea is one of the best I've heard. It is about a janitor who finds a magazine of himself from over ten years ago and figures out that time is frozen. She is finished with the filming process, which is very impressive, and I really like the mise-en-scène elements she did. The magazine is a very creative idea, and it was well done. We suggested that she should incorperte back-round music and she will look into it.
Selena's idea is a classic of an innocent girl who is in the forest being haunted by a weird creature. I like this idea, but filming in the dark is very hard, especially with the lighting needed to project this wierd creature. I really like the idea of the messages the mom is sending, but the creative part is that there is no wifi, so the messages will all come at once. This adds suspense due to the lack of wifi.
Isa is doing a girl who is up to no good. The plot is about a popular high school kid who has a mysterious trip she is going on. Now she is seen packing in a rush to leave. She mentioned her concerns about not wanting back-round music to be corny, and I suggested a guitar heavy backround song, and she said she will consider it. I also really like that she is dressing the girl in all black incorperating her knowledge of color schemes.
Last but not least is me. They all really liked our idea and liked the mise-en-scène elements. As far as the CCR goes, I did not have any ideas. Andre was a huge help and suggested I should take advantage of my dad's studio. She mentioned that I should do an interview of the actors and make it a talk show. I will probably do this because I believe we can make it funny.

First Day Recording

Our first day of recording was a massive success! The process was smooth and took approximately 2 hours. Today we filmed credit scenes. We did not want a black screen with rolling credits because that is boring and requires no creativity. We were looking for a clean and aesthetically pleasing background This keeps the audience engaged. These shots do not correlate with anything in the film, nor will they have an impact. They are there for aesthetics and we chose these shots because the film will involve a lot of laboratory shots.

Now lets dive into the fun stuff. My team and I headed to our local supermarket right after school to pick up vinegar, baking soda, and glycerin. We believed that this would make a big chemical reaction if we added it to water, but to our surprise it did not. The glycerin we bought came in gummy form, and we were not expecting it. Our original experiment combination did not work.

After trying another combination for a couple of minutes, Sam suggested that we should do just vinegar and baking soda. We quickly realised that this combination gave us just what we were searching for. The only issue was that after experimenting, the vinegar was starting to run out. Not only that, but we attempted to shoot 2 times, and the shots did not come out how we wanted them to. The first one was too shaky and for the second one we did not pour enough baking soda to get the reaction we where looking for. Once again, we had to improvise. After going in the pantry, Jalin got apple cider vinegar. This gave the same exact reaction as vinegar but it was a far more reactive! This was just what we needed!
 ( regular vinegar)

 ( apple cider vinegar)

The reasoning behind this choice is the representation of the color red. We want to make the audience feel that something is wrong. The color red allows for that to happen. The reasoning for the dark lighting goes hand in hand with the reasoning for the third. The dark room not only makes the reactions look better, but it also adds a sense of mystery.
Moving on to the back-round elements of the shots, we used 2 YouTube videos for the back-round. (Which are linked at the bottom of this blog). Thankfully, i own a monitor stand, and it can hook 2 monitors at the same time. For the monitor on the left, we used a video of bubbles under a microscope we found on youtube. For the second video we used a scientific looking background just to make it look more professional.
Under the monitors, I grabbed a couple of medicines from my parents' closet and made it look disorganized and chaotic. This is how a typical doctor's office is represented in the media, so we wanted to stick to that. The mess also makes the shot feel more chaotic.
We are still considering using a shot of somebody putting on a glove in the dark. We positioned the hand on the right third to give space for the credits to be on the left third.

Overall i am very proud of us. I can talk about how well we work as a team all day, and this is what makes this process so enjoyable. This did not feel like homework because of how enjoyable it was. I also really liked the mise en scene elements, and I am looking forward to filming again very soon.

introducing the logo in the film

So yesterday, we encountered our first roadblock. I am sad but certainly not surprised because obstacles like this one are expected to happen. Thankfully, my hardworking team and i where well prepared and up to schedule, so this was an easy fix. Originally, we scheduled to film yesterday and that did not happen. Sam's dad came back home from work late, and he was a crucial piece in for filming. My dad was not available until 9 PM today, so we decided to film tomorrow. For tomorrow's shots, we do not need any parents, so it is just my team and I.

Frankly, going into class today i was very frustrated that we where behind on filming so after a profound lesson on how to do a CCR, my team and i had roughly 30 minutes to work on our portfolio projects. I was determined to get something done, so we began brainstorming on how we would introduce our production logo. After Sam found a website with templates, we immediately got to work. Many of the websites we attempted to use required a pricey subscription so it took a lot longer than we had originally expected to find a good template that was free to use.

After further research, I hit the jackpot. Canva has free templates without a watermark. Thankfully Canva is very user-friendly, so the process took no longer than 20 minutes. I set the chore ideas down I layered the music, smoke, and logo. The key touch was adjusting the transparency. Since our logo is light blue, it looked very awkward layered over a black screen. I tried adjusting the saturation and brightness, but nothing satisfied me. After playing around with the transparency i quickly settled for 36.

You may be asking about the font, letters, or even the title. In class i learned Jalin researched all about fonts and titles, so he will be taking care of the font for the logo introduction and the credit scenes. Although we had a minor setback, my team and I will certainly make up for it tomorrow.

Production Logo

Making our production logo was a smooth and easy process that took around 20 minutes thanks to user-friendly designing by Canva. We all are proud of our logo and really like the plain but clean look it has. Thankfully our communication is great, and we all listen and elaborate upon our ideas.

Our production name is "SSJ Entertainment," the initials of our names: Santi, Sam, and Jalin. We believed it had a nice ring to it, and it is obviously personalized to us. Our school is located in Weston, Florida, so an idea we had in mind was "Weston Bros," but we felt like it was cheesy. Although our correlate name is not as creative, it has a nice ring, and it is original.

The popcorn on the side of the logo and camera directly correlates with the production part. I am the oldest member in the group, so we decided it would be since 2008. The reasoning for the blue was purely because it was aesthetically pleasing.

Overall we are very happy with our logo and below is a video of the process. We had issues recording and our instructor can confirm this so the video is not great quality.

Casting

For our casting, changes have been made. Originally, we planned to have an Interviewer, Dr. Mueller, and three patients who had taken the medicine. Those patients were going to be represented as moms or middle-aged women. The thought process behind having three moms do it was to demonstrate the impact it had worldwide. After meeting with our instructor, we came to the conclusion that it would be unclear who the film would be following. Not to mention, following three separate characters who seem to have no connection was just not a good idea, so we quickly shifted away from that.
After recognizing that we had to focus on one patient, we decided that eliminating the doctor from the film would make it solely focused on the patient. Based on media representation, the norm would be a man saving the world, and we believed the film would be far more interesting with a man than a regular mom tasked with this highly intense job. With that being said, we shifted our focus to finding a male actor. Jalin suggested his dad would be perfect because of his wide build with muscle. This is perfect because Maverick will be represented as an every day guy, but the build is just perfect because he has just enough muscle to take on some of the tasks he will be facing.
The Doctor will be my dad. This has been a decision set in stone since the day we came up with the idea. My dad has russian roots in his family, and he looks Russian, so we decided that he would be a great fit for the doctor. The doctor being Russian adds a sense of mystery. He speaks with a slight accent, so it fits the russian representation. It will also be a challenge further in the film that Dr. Mueller's laboratory being in Russia will cause issues, so it further develops the plot. This explains the reasoning behind the name Dr. Mueller.
Sam's dad will be the interviewer. He will fit this role because of his professional look. His hairstyle and tall, skinny look will fit the role of a famous host for a show because this is how the "usual" host for a show looks. Maria Taylor comes to mind from ESPN.

This casting was easy to make. These are people who will be available because we share a home with them, leading to a fairly easy film process. This allows us to stay on schedule and have the best work possible because they are adults. We did not want teenagers like us being in the film because it makes the film look unprofessional.

The Studio

This is the most exited i have ever been about writing a blog. The more I think about the studio, the more eager I become to start filming. I believe this podcast studio will certainly make this film opening look professionally produced.

In my opinion, mise-en-scene elements make or break a film. The importance of this cannot be underestimated as they it can: create emotional tone, shape power relationships, represent anything, create symoblism...You get the point, it is CRUCIAL.

Thankfully, I have a dad who works in the media atmosphere. He has an office where he records many media productions like podcasts and interviews, which is perfect for this film, an interview. The inspiration for our film came from the studio because my team and I wanted to have something that made us stand out. While we kept our chore idea about an issue in the medical field, we where able to incorporate and take advantage of the resources we had at hand.

When the film transitions to the show like mentioned in my previous blog, a visual will come on screen showing that this is live announcement. We are still debating on whether we will film on the dark side or the white chairs. We are torn between the professional look for the show or the dark back-round wall that sets the tone for the news Dr Mueller is about to break. A decision will be made very soon. Some background elements for both places can be changed, so when all of our team gets there, we will come up with a background we all agree on. The lighting will be based off what background we choose. What we do have decided is that the microphones will be in the scenes regardless of what side settle on.
What we also have also decided is the costume designs for both the interviewer and Dr. Mueller. The interviewer will be wearing something very formal since this is a big show with a big audince he will dress formally. This also develops the importance of the show since he is dressed nicely, which implies the show has made him very wealthy. We want to imply this because it shows the importance of Dr. Mueller's status.

Dr. Mueller will not be wearing his doctor outfit because he is not in his office, but he will be wearing a formal blue shirt. The blue will be a more light washed out blue. This small detail develops tone. A washed-out blue usually represents sadness. This would also work out great because there are many formal washed blue shirts, so the blend of money he has made from the medicine but the sadness the new medicine has caused him, all blend in one shirt. Little details like this will set the tone very early

Here are pictures of the studio.

Sound Elements

With so many visuals being displayed all at once, sound is one of the most overlooked aspects in films in this day and age. Sound effects and background music are good examples of small details that many individuals overlook. My team and I will be incorporating both sound effects and background music because we understand how the quality of a film can be improved if these two are done correctly. We will turn into foley artists, allowing us to use our creativity. Not only does it allow us to be creative, but we can make this process a lot more fun than just finding copy-right free sounds on YouTube.

The film will begin with Maverick watching Dr. Mueller about to break the big news with intense back round music as the show begins. The sound of the show will sound like it is coming out of a device because the film opens up with Maverick's POV watching. The film will smoothly transition into the actual show, improving the sound quality as if the audience were actually watching the news being broken.

When the interviewer introduces himself, a clapping sound effect will come in as if there was a live audience watching. A live audience implies that this is a big show with a big fanbase. When Dr. Mueller breaks the news, a second or 2 of absolute silence is going to make the audience feel uncomfortable and will add to the already dark scene.

A cut back to Maverick's face, seen through a close up , will be displayed with him freaking out through dialogue.

A sudden cut back to the show, introduced by a sound bridge of the intense news-like background music, will introduce the show one last time to reveal that Dr. Mueller took his own life.

After the cut back to Maverick, he will be seen typing, but we want to foley the typing because that is a lot more fun than just downloading a sound. The foley would improve the quality of the sound as it will be slightly more precise.

Fake Blood

Incorporating fake blood is crucial for this film's opening. Making it look realistic is not an easy task, as it can appear corny and unrealistic if it doesn't come out properly. Maverick will open the film while watching the news, with blood covering multiple parts of his body. We also want to make it apparent that he has been bleeding for a while by adding dry blood to other parts of his body. Depending on how it looks, maybe a band-aid or 2 can also show that he has been bleeding for a while. As soon as Dr. Mueller announces the news, he will immediately understand where the bleeding is coming from. The blood will be seen as a side effect of the drug and will emphasize the severity of the side effects Maverick will be dealing with throughout the duration of the film.
Another creative idea suggested by Jalin during class was coughing up blood. Mixing red food coloring with water and other ingredients. This video has many great and inexpensive ideas which we will likely be using. Maverick would cough, displayed through a close up. The following shot would be a close up of the water and food coloring mix stained on Maverick's clothes. This is another unique way of emphasizing the severity of the sickness, and not only that, but it reduces the risk of unprofessional looking shots.
The low-key lighting in Maverick's room is a great way to intensify the mood. Maverick will be watching the news at night or in a dark room. This detail adds a "something is wrong" feeling to the mood and further develops the tone. Although the lighting has nothing to do with the injury itself, it makes the viewer feel uncomfortable, which is the aim of the opening scene.
The other big mise-en-scene element in Mavericks house is his laptop, which he will be researching on. Below is some inspiration we have for Mavericks' blood.

Character Development

Patient 1 from the previous blog now has a name: Maverick. The reason we decided to name him Maverick was due to its meaning. A maverick is somebody who does things differently. In the context of this film, the name can be represented or seen as an alpha. The plot of this film is all about Maverick saving himself and more importantly a very large population. Some of the obstacles he will go through are the effects of the medicine, his lack of knowledge about medicine, and figuring out what went wrong. This is all taking place in the span of 48 hours before every patient dies.

As far as the mise-en scene elements go, Maverick will wear jeans and a leather jacket. This choice for costume design is not random. There is a why and thought that went into this. After examining and analysing protagonist who face similar adversity to the one Maverick has to face, most wear similar clothing. I believe the durability and sturdy denim represent a no-nonsense and straight business look, which is key for mavericks personality and visual representation. As far as accessories we believe glasses will add a nerdy look because he will be experimenting with some formulas and medical equipment to find a solution. Obviously, he will face a boatload of trouble with the medical equipment like explosions. We want to make this film very detail-oriented, and ever since taking this class a have a much deeper appreciation for little details like this.

Maverick's props will be his computer, which he will need to do research to add detail to his nerdy look. Jalin's computer will work out great because of the stickers he has on it. I feel like this matches Maverick’s aesthetics very well. Another prop will be his energy drinks because he will certainly be getting no sleep due to the time crunch.

Overall, Maverick's character will be represented as a tough-minded individual who will need mental resilience to face all the bumps along the long, challenging road ahead. His aesthetics such as costume design, props, and name, will help paint a more clear picture of who he truly is.

Below are some inspirations we have for Maverick's aesthetic.

The Script

Interviewer: Welcome to the Daily Updates Show. I am your host David Litmen and I am thrilled to have the highly distinguished clinician and researcher Doctor Mueller.

Mueller: Thank you so much for having me here today. It is an honor to be on the big stage.

Interviewer: Well, let's get started. As many of you know, Dr. Mueller requested to be here today

Mueller: Yes, I did, and the reason for that is a big announcement regarding my newest medicine released just 3 days ago. All 2 million of you who bought it will likely want to hear this...i know after announcing this many consequences will come that will derail the rest of my life.

Mueller: With that being said...You all have 48 hours to live.

Patient: WHAT?!

Interviewer: Laughs sarcastically* Ok let's get serious now

Mueller: I am being serious... Im so sorry, I will work endlessly to find a cure ASAP.

Patient: This mother fuuuuu

Interviewer: 5 hours later* I know nobody was expecting me to be back so soon but I must inform everybody doctor Mueller is no longer with us. He took his own life moments after his announcement.

This is our script for the scene. We used our class time effectively and efficiently, finishing it up in class. As soon as class started, we got to work and began writing. We had an idea, but it was confusing, and the opening was not clear about who the movie would follow. After discussing with our group and my teacher, we came up with a more clear script. By eliminating the doctor early, it is now clear that the movie will follow the patient. We also made it abundantly clear this was a well known doctor right away with the number of purchases and the recognition the host gives the doctor from the beggeining.
With that being said, we will begin filming very soon, and we are all looking forward to it! Here is a picture of me and my team coming up with the script.
